Hillsborough County spay and neuter vouchers can take a lot of the sticker shock out of getting your dog or cat fixed, and plenty of local pet owners do not know the program exists.
Pet care adds up fast, especially when you are trying to do the responsible thing. If you live in Brandon, Valrico, FishHawk, Lithia, Riverview or anywhere else in Hillsborough County, there is a county program that can help income-qualifying residents pay for spay or neuter surgery.
What Are Hillsborough County Spay and Neuter Vouchers?
The county’s Spay and Neuter Voucher Program helps income-qualifying residents get this surgery for their dogs and cats. It runs through Hillsborough County Pet Resources and is meant for families who may not be able to cover the full cost on their own. The basic idea is simple: get approved, receive a voucher, choose a participating vet and pay a small co-pay at your appointment.
Who Qualifies?
You must be a Hillsborough County resident and either take part in certain public assistance programs or meet the low-income guidelines. Qualifying programs include Food Stamps, Hillsborough Health Care Plan, Medicaid, Section 8 Housing, Supplemental Security Income, TANF and Women, Infants & Children. You can also qualify through income, which the county says cannot be higher than 185 percent of the federal poverty level.
Hillsborough County spay and neuter vouchers are meant for residents who need help covering the cost, not every pet owner automatically. If you are not sure where you stand, review the county’s eligibility details or contact Pet Resources.
How Much Does It Cost?
With Hillsborough County spay and neuter vouchers, a $10 co-pay is required for each animal. That covers a rabies shot and an updated Hillsborough County pet registration tag, so your pet gets caught up on two things at once. For families who have been putting off surgery because of cost, that is a pretty big deal.
How to Apply for Hillsborough County Spay and Neuter Vouchers
The application is not online-only. You can download it in English or Spanish, request one by mail, or pick one up at the Pet Resource Center in Tampa. You will need a copy of your driver’s license plus proof of eligibility, such as a copy of your benefit card, proof of public assistance or last year’s tax filing form.
Once you have everything together, mail or hand deliver the completed application and documents to the Pet Resource Center at 440 N. Falkenburg Road in Tampa. It is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and you can reach Pet Resources with questions at (813) 301-7387.
What Happens After You Apply?
The county reviews your application, and if you are approved, they give you a list of participating veterinarians. From there, choose a clinic and make an appointment within 45 days. Bring your voucher and the $10 co-pay for each animal to the appointment.
One important note: do not bring your pet to the Pet Resource Center for surgery. The procedure is done at a participating veterinary clinic, not at the county center.
