Fat Willie’s Fish Camp Celebrates 50 Years

For half a century, Fat Willie’s Fish Camp has been a beloved institution in Valrico, Florida. Established in 1975 by William Robinson, this family-owned seafood haven has welcomed generations of diners seeking fresh, high-quality seafood in a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The building itself has a rich history, dating back to 1915 when Mr. Lubeck Brandon first constructed it in the heart of downtown Valrico as a general store. In 1922, A.L. Porter took over the business and continued to operate it as a general store until 1941, when he passed it down to his daughter and son-in-law, Zaidee and Henry Sharrar. For nearly three decades, the store provided groceries, dry goods, fuel and feed while also housing the local U.S. Post Office.

In 1970, the Russell family transformed the historic space into a restaurant, setting the stage for its future as a culinary landmark. Five years later, William Robinson purchased the establishment and introduced the concept of a traditional “Fish Camp,” inspired by the many seafood restaurants he had encountered while living and traveling in North Carolina.

“Fat Willie’s,” as it has come to be affectionately known, embodies the essence of fish camp dining—simplicity, freshness and quality. Robinson’s philosophy was straightforward: serve fresh seafood, prepared to order and never compromise on quality. By keeping seafood iced until the moment it reaches the kitchen, Fat Willie’s ensures that every meal is as fresh as possible. This commitment to excellence has made the restaurant a favorite among locals and visitors alike.

Now, as Fat Willie’s Fish Camp celebrates 50 years in business, it stands as a testament to the power of tradition, dedication and family values. From its humble beginnings as a general store to its status as a beloved seafood institution, the restaurant remains a cherished part of Valrico’s history. As the next generation continues the legacy, one thing is certain—Fat Willie’s Fish Camp will keep serving up fresh seafood and warm hospitality for years to come.

Here’s to 50 years of great food, great memories and many more to come!
